Bengal went one step further in the development of Indian learning by winning the Ramanujan award from Kolkata.

This year’s Ramanujan award went to Kolkata mathematician Neena Gupta. Professor Nina Gupta from Calcutta won the Ramanujan Award as the fourth Indian mathematician.

Biography of Neena Gupta: 

Nina was born in Gujarat. He studied in Gujarat till second class. Then she came to Calcutta and enrolled in a school in Dunlop. After graduating from Bethune College, she was admitted to ISI in Barahanagar for postgraduate studies. She completed his PhD from there.

Nina, an alumnus of Dunlop’s Khalsa High School, has been a worm of numbers since childhood. Nina received the 2021 Ramanujan Award for her exemplary work in ‘Affine Algebraic Geometry’ and ‘Computational Algebra’. According to the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Central Government, she is the third Indian woman, as well as fourth Indian to receive the Ramanujan Award. Of the four recipients of the award so far, three are ISI professors.

Nina solved the fundamental problem of algebraic geometry, the ‘Jarisky Cancellation Problem’. That same year she was awarded the Young Scientist of the Indian National Academy of Sciences. Her solution was hailed as “one of the best works in algebraic geometry”.

Nina has recently done one of the best work on ‘Algebraic Geometry’ in any part of the world. That problem was raised in 1949 by Oscar Zarisky, one of the inventors of algebraic geometry.
